Today I did a three-events in Arras. We started with the 100m. Before the race I noticed a strong head wind and I tried to push as long as possible. 12.48 by a -2.3 m/s wind is a reasonable time. Javelin was the next event. Again I did well. With 50.83 I had another 50m+ performances. It is just waiting for that one throw. Javelin was followed by Long jump. My first two jumps were fouls (I was only over the plastice 1mm twice), but the jumps were far. The 3rd jump I took of before the board. 5.71 was reasonable considering the circumstances. Next week I’ll do another race over 100 and another long jump competition.

This week the hard training sessions started again. It will be a block of a couple of weeks where we will go back to basic training, although it won’t look the same as in the winter. Tuesday I did my first speed endurance session since a long time (due to competitions and an injury). It hurt, but it does feel good being able to train injury free.
Even though training will be the most important for the moment, I will compete in the next couple of weeks, just to keep rythm. Next saturday I will start a triathlon in Arras (100-long jump-javelin). Next week I will be back in Holland for the Harry Schulting Games (Long jump-100) and the week after that I will compete in our national championships in Amsterdam (100m hurdles and shot).
A little week after Arles I competed in Leiden. Joe and I decided to get the first race out of the way as soon as possible and work from there. Friday morning I did a good session with Marita van Zwol (Gregory Sedoc’s coach) and the focus for the competition was to run with high rhytm.
Even though teh wind was blowing a bit too hard (+2.5), I was very happy with my time of 13.50. The 15.06 in the shot was more than welcome, too. (I am still able to do well)
….doesn’t always work for the 100m hurdles.
A smost of you already heard or read: I proved shape in Arles last weekend and qualified for the olympic games. Last week my coaches and me decided to Arles with one goal: proof shape for the Olympic games (I did the qualifying standard last year and had to score the B-standard to proof form).
When we arrived on the track we almost blew away. All the heptathletes waited for the wind results of the 100m men. Except for one heat, they were all aided with too much wind.
I was in the last heat of the hurdles and decided to go full. The result was that I almost fell over the first hurdle, stubled to the second. Got over the second one somehow and then started racing. The rest of my race was very good, but I was to close to the last hurdle again, nearly fell again, but made it to the finish line in 13.67. Quite a good time

Unfortunately, High jump didn’t go the way I wanted it to. Training went well, but I just missed sharpness to clear the higher height. 1.68 wasn’t extraordinary, but still good enough to stay in race for 5800.
In the shot it was clear I missed sharpness, I struggled to throw a good result and 14.73 is not my normal level. But again it was good enough to qualify.
The next 3 events were crucial, not only because of the wind, but also because of the injury risk.
I decided I had to run the 200 relaxed and technically good. The results was 24.80 and I was happy my wind was legal again.
The second day we decided I would do one jump and one throw. Unfortunately my first jump was a foul. After a long discussion with the judges I decided to jump again. My second jump was a poor 5.74. But we decided it was good enough to stop and focus on the javelin.
The warm up for the javelin felt good and so was my throw. 51.76 was a pb and I was very happy with it.
The 800 was hard. There was lots of wind on the back straight and because I wasn’t 100% sharp I just couldn’t pull it off. No worries for me though, cause I easily made the B-standard by scoring 5961 points.
It was a hard weekend with difficult decisions (pull out of the long jump after a 5.74 jump), and lots of wind (luckily I have a legal score). In the other hand I didn’t give myself the full 100% to prevent injuries. For the moment it’s all in my favour.
Yesterday we read in the newspaper that I will do a qualifying attempt in Arles this weekend. Indeed, I am on the starting list and I will start in Arles, but we are not sure if it will be an attempt. Arles is a little town in the ending of the rhone river. When the wind is coming from the north west, it blows very hard because it is pushed through two mountain chaines (Alps and Massive Central). The wind is not there all the time, but when it blows it is way above the wind limit for a legal heptathlon. I see Arles as my first competition after my hamstring injury in Desenzano. If the wind is legal, I can decide there and then if I make it a serieus attempt, or just see it as a training meeting. We will see what happens.
