Scans and decisions

It has been a while since I wrote something, but that was foreseen. Since Beijing I haven’t trained and took my time to rest, eat and drink and go on a holiday (Sicily). I am well rested now.

Last week monday I drove to Holland to get all the examinations done in Hospital De Gelderse Vallei, and I would like to thank all the doctors there for their quick and good care. The examination were on tuesday. Before I went there I drove to Leusden to drop off my Olympic car. The NOC only gives those who finished top-8 in Beijing a A-Status (professional Status, with Salasry and a car). And I didn’t finish.
It was a long day in the hospital (my brother, Jeroen, came with me). We arrived at 2pm and left at 7.30pm. First they made a X-ray of my jaw. I had some pains and it turned out my wisdom teeth had to be extracted (I came back on thursday to get it done. And I have been looking like a hamster ever since). After that Dr Vergouwen did some manual test, they made an X-ray and MRI of my left knee and right ankle, followed by an echography of my knee.
The results came really quickly. And although it wasn’t the result I was hoping for, I was happy I knew where I was at.
The scans showed that my patella-tendinitis has gone worse (I did chose to go for the OG year, and my little accident in Beijing made it worse). It means I have two choices: 1) get operated, with a chance of 50% that I will be painfree afterwards, 2) take a year to rehabilitate, physiotherapy and exercise, no jumping and no throwing. If I can run painfree I can run.

I choose the second option which means that it’s almost sure I will not compete in a heptathlon in 2009. If my knee recovers well I will do competitions in running events.
The reason I will follow this route is that I think I’m young enough to take a year to recover and come back stronger. On top of that: I think the chances of a succesfull operation are too small.

I did expect a result like this, but it is still hard to swallow. I am sure I will get back stronger and I will give my knee time to fully recover. It will be a long road and I need to be very patient.

WISH ME LUCK!!
